Five tools are worse than one

A task app, a notes app, a habit tracker, a calendar, and the planner you bought in January. Each one holds a piece of your life, none hold all of it.

The failure isn't the tools: it's the gaps left between them.

You built the system to get things out of your head. It put them back. Nothing you install fixes that.

Your brain is not storage

In 2011, psychologists Masicampo and Baumeister asked people to think about an important task they hadn't finished — a looming deadline, an errand left undone — then sat them down to do unrelated work. The unfinished task followed them in. Reading slowed. Comprehension dropped. Attention leaked toward the open loop instead of the work in front of them.

Then they found the off switch. A second group first wrote down a specific plan for the unfinished thing: just when and where they'd do it. That group's interference vanished. Same unfinished task — but once the brain trusted it was captured somewhere, it let go.

Your brain doesn't hold things because it's disorganized. It holds them because it has no safe place to store them.

So where does everything go?

Your calendar. The free, default one that came with your phone — an app that barely registers as a productivity tool, because technically it isn't one.

It's the only thing you own that holds a commitment and knows when it happens. It's already on your phone, already open, already the thing you check without being reminded to.

It doesn't need to win against the other tools — it only needs to be complete.
